Don’t Say Goodbye

A Villanelle

Rotten like an apple, we were doomed from the very start.
Mangled like a sickly cat, I hurl myself over the wall to decay.
Now, I know you didn’t intend to, but you stole my heart.

Silly on Martinis, we would squirrel away to talk of Descartes.
Dissolving in the memories of before, you led me astray.
Rotten like an apple, we were doomed from the very start.

Isolated from the cold wound of society, I was ready to depart.
I apply powdered glitter as twilight moves in, ending the day.
Now, I know you didn’t intend to, but you stole my heart.

Itching with desire, you had to buy baby oil from the mini-mart.
Lipstick on cigarettes had you fumbling, your life in disarray.
Rotten like an apple, we were doomed from the very start.

Your voice faltered on the phone, knowing me to be book-smart.
Remember the burgeoning in late May, eating Angel Delight for my birthday.
Now, I know you didn’t intend to, but you stole my heart.

With your dying breath, you gave the gift of Paris to me like Bogart.
Was it all just a crock of humbug, or were we chasing a Blue Jay?
Rotten like an apple, we were doomed from the very start.
Now, I know you didn’t intend to, but you stole my heart.
